Kata’s husband was arrested by the Gestopo for being Jewish. She heard if she could prove that James fought for Germany in WWI she could get him released. The Nazis had broken into their home, along with other Jewish homes, and stolen art work, jewelry and important documents. They threw the documents on the street. Someone in the town, gathered up the papers and put them on the floor in a bank to protect them from the weather. Kata went to the bank and dug through the paperwork and found James’ papers proving he was a soldier in the war.
She took them to authorities and he was released. The family, James, Kata, and their 12 year old daughter, escaped to England. Kata saved James’ life and the family prospered in England and then ten years later moved to the US.
Note by Barbara: Kate was interviewed before her death by the USC Shoah Foundation for their project, ” Visual History Archive: The Holocaust.” Her interview is not publicly available.
