My 2nd great-grandmother “Annie” was born in NYC to William Cleary, an Irish horseshoer from Mott St, and her mother Mary Pyne. She married John (Jack) Hanlon and together they had 14 children, several of whom died young. I’m descended from her first child, Mary Agnes (Mae), born in 1888. Anna died in 1910 during childbirth of shock and hemorrhage after a prolonged labor, according to the Coroner’s Report I accessed on microfilm at the NYC Municipal Archives. In 2022 I visited her grave at Calvary Cemetery in Queens. She is special to me as I have her family bible and her wedding ring which I wear daily.

They were handed down to first born descendants on their 16th birthday. Her daughter Mae married a John Duke, my great-grandparents. Their direct line held many reunions, the last one organized by myself as the “Duke-Hanlon Clan”, after building the family tree and finding all my second cousins. Now the next generation has become close through social media which warms our Irish hearts.
